How to purchase Appliances and save money

Accounting for the electricity bill while purchasing appliances is not something most of us do. This is one item that contributes to teh total cost and therefore be included in the calcuation. and yet this is the most neglected one. However, for the money-conscious individual, being able control the electric bills is a great way to save money. Here are a few tips to help you purchase appliances that will make your life more convenient without necessarily bleeding your pockets dry. These tips should guide you to save money and earn some valuable peace of mind.

1. Consider the appliance’s energy efficiency rate. Most appliance stores post their wares’ energy efficiency rates along with the wares themselves. These rates tell the consumer how much electricity they would expect to use with these appliances. If you do not understsand the calculations, ask the dealer to explain the same to you. Understand this from a usage perspective. Also ask them how to save on consumption. They will usually have a useful tip or two.

Make sure that you consider how much electricity the appliances will consume before you purchase them. This should be one of the factors to consider when shopping around for appliances. Although you may not feel it directly, an appliance that hemorrhages electricity will make a serious dent in your bill every month. If you take this cost into consideration right in the begining, you are also preparing yourself mentally to pay these bills. You will therefore not be shocked when the electricity bill arrives.

2. Is it something you really require? Consider your needs. While it isn’t a guess at all to buy what you want, think hard and deep if the appliance in front of you is something you truly need. If it isn’t something you truly need, then you might want to back off from it. Far too often, people purchase things that they don’t really need. Aside from being a nuisance in the home-and something that eventually gets relegated to the garage-these things only waste electricity. Most of the purchases are merely for teh sake of owning the appliance. While its actual utility to the household may be a pittance, it serves as a luxury item for the house owner. get out of tis mentality and start believing in your true self. you do not need an appliance to show off your richness, especially if you  find it hard to clear your electricity bills. Start living realistically.

3. Go for gas if possible. If you are trying to save on electricity, you’ll want to stay away from appliances that produce heat using electricity. These appliances are among the most energy consuming ones around because they produce that heat by a process that is both wasteful and inefficient. These are the silent energy consumers.

For example, electric irons, curling irons, electric stoves and other such appliances waste electricity more than most other appliances. Instead of using electric stoves, why not stick to a gas stove. Gas stoves are more energy-efficient and won’t make your electric meter spin like a top. These are small things to do that will help save money on the appliance now and on the electricity consumption later.

If you must use such appliances, make sure to schedule their use so that they are efficient. Avoid having to heat them up only to let them cool down again and using them again. If the appliance has to start from a cold start it will use up a tremendous amount of energy. Take these things into conssideration right in the buying stages itself. If you have an alternative medium that will save electricity costs, you should consider it from a savings perspective. If appliances can be avoided in the first place, it means a lot of savings and the capital money is safe in your bank. And later you also save on electricity.

4. Go for florescent bulbs. Do you know that this saves energy? Incandescent bulbs are one of the most wasteful types of appliances in the home. The incandescent bulb is wasteful because it not only produces light, it also produces heat. This means that the energy it uses doesn’t all go to light. In fact, the light bulb only uses about 10% of its energy for light. The rest is wasted on heat.

As if this is not enough wastage, more heat from the bulbs also means that your airconditioning unit will consume more electricity to keep the room cool. Thats electricity wasted on airconditioning because of electricity wasted on lighting. Think about it and opt for flourescent lamps instead.

While choosing the appliance, check for its suitabiity to your living environment. Dont purchase something just because it is the market trend. Evaluate if it is really useful to you. If it is , then look at options that will save you money on the appliance itself and then later reduce the energy consumption. This way you will be able to take a rational money saving decision!
